Ⅰ. Introduction:

The permeability of paint to water vapor is to suspend the paint film of the material at the opening of the shallow cup. Then, in a controlled environment, a desiccant is used to extract or inject water vapor into the cup. In a specific period of time, the passage rate of water vapor to the paint film is measured by reducing or increasing the weight of the contents in the cup. The permeability of paint film to other substrates in gaseous state can be determined by the same method.

The permeability cup is designed according to GB/T 17146, ISO 7783-2018 and ASTM D 1653. It is a shallow cylinder with a threaded flange, a flat protective washer and a threaded ring cover. Seal the sample tightly between the cup and the ring cover with rubber gasket. The cup and lid are grooved for easy hand-holding.

Two different sizes of permeability cups are available:
Large size: 25cm² cup, meeting ASTM standard.
Small size: 10cm² cup, can use smaller samples and less desiccant.

During the test, water vapor enters the open desiccant container or other absorbent materials in the controlled environment from the cup through the paint film sample. Permeability cup and other containers are sealed in a larger container to provide controllable water vapor pressure.

You can also test by this method: let water vapor enter the desiccant or other materials in the permeability cup from the solution in the open container through the test film.
